ENTOMO 2025
Are you passionate about insects and their fascinating world? Join the upcoming Workshop on Insect Taxonomy & Entrepreneurship
Monday, May 5, 2025

The National Workshop on Insect Taxonomy and Entrepreneurship, organised by the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in collaboration with the Prof. T.C. Narendran Trust for Animal Taxonomy and the Department of Zoology, University of Calicut, concluded on a high note today. It marked four days of intensive scientific engagement and skill-building.
Held from May 14 to 17, the workshop brought together budding entomologists, researchers, and students from across the country to deepen their understanding of insect taxonomy and explore innovative avenues in ecological entrepreneurship. Participants received hands-on training in identifying major insect orders such as Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera under the expert guidance of some of India's foremost taxonomists:
- Dr. K.D. Prathapan (Kerala Agricultural University) – on Coleoptera
- Dr. K. Rajmohana (Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata) - on Hymenoptera
- Dr. Girish Kumar P. (ZSI, Kozhikode) - on Hymenoptera
- Dr. Kalesh Sadasivan (Travancore Natural History Society) - on Lepidoptera
In addition to rigorous taxonomy sessions, the workshop strongly emphasised entomology's entrepreneurial potential. From biodiversity conservation and sustainable pest management to ecological product development, participants were introduced to viable career paths beyond traditional academic roles.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kannan C S Warrier, Director of KFRI, whose support was instrumental in bringing the initiative to fruition. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Warrier underscored the critical role of taxonomy in ecological research and policy-making and urged young scientists to leverage their skills for conservation-driven innovation.
The workshop served not only as a platform for scientific exchange but also as a launchpad for future leaders in entomology who are committed to bridging science, sustainability, and society.
