KFRI Golden Jubilee Celebrations

The Department of Wildlife Biology at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) organised a two-day training workshop on Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) using MaxEnt, held from March 13th to 14th, 2025. The event, aimed at enhancing the skills of researchers in modern conservation tools, was inaugurated by Dr. Kannan C. S. Warrier, the Director of KFRI. In his opening address, Dr. Kannan C. S. Warrier highlighted the institute's commitment to promoting contemporary research tools as part of its golden jubilee celebrations.

A total of 42 researchers from 22 organizations across South India participated in the workshop. The sessions were led by expert trainers Dr. Shameer T.T., Project Scientist at the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation in Chennai, and Mr. Sreehari Raman, Assistant Professor at the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and researcher at KFRI. The workshop provided hands-on training on using MaxEnt, a widely-used software for modelling species distributions, which is essential for ecological and conservation studies.

The valedictory function saw the presence of Dr Kannan C. S. Warrier, along with Dr S. Sandeep, the Registrar-in-Charge, and Dr P. Balakrishnan, the Workshop Coordinator and Head of the Department of Wildlife Biology. During the ceremony, certificates were distributed to the participants, recognising their completion of the training.

The workshop has been praised for equipping participants with valuable skills in species distribution modelling, contributing to the field of wildlife conservation and environmental science.
