As part of its ongoing Golden Jubilee celebrations and in observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) hosted an enlightening session centered around the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
The session featured a compelling talk titled "Sacred Groves & Their Biodiversity Values," delivered by Dr. Kannan C S Warrier, Director of KFRI. In his inspiring presentation, Dr. Warrier delved into the ecological and cultural significance of sacred groves—small forest patches traditionally protected by local communities across Kerala and India.
Drawing from decades of research and his unwavering dedication to conservation, Dr. Warrier highlighted how sacred groves serve as vital reservoirs of biodiversity, preserving rare and endemic species while embodying centuries-old cultural and spiritual values. He emphasized that these sacred spaces are not only ecological hotspots but also living examples of traditional conservation practices that align perfectly with the principles of sustainable development.
“The preservation of sacred groves is a testament to the wisdom of our ancestors and their intrinsic understanding of ecological balance,” Dr. Warrier remarked. “Protecting them means protecting both our natural legacy and cultural identity.”
The talk served as a reminder of the interconnectedness of biodiversity, human well-being, and cultural heritage. It also echoed the broader message of the International Day for Biological Diversity — that true sustainability arises from living in harmony with the natural world.
KFRI extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Kannan C S Warrier for his thought-provoking insights and leadership in forest conservation.
Together, let us continue to honor and safeguard our natural heritage — for present and future generations.
