Complex challenges of forest management
Forest Conservation and Human-Wildlife Synergy.
Tuesday, December 16, 2025
The second day of the Tropical Forestry Conclave at KSCSTE-KFRI focused on the complex challenges of forest management and the evolving dynamics of human-wildlife interactions. With the theme "Forest Conservation and Management," the day’s sessions brought together seasoned foresters and wildlife experts to discuss policy shifts and the biological threats facing tropical landscapes.
Session 1: Strategies for the Future
The morning began with a high-level dialogue on the "Perspectives and Outlook" of forestry. Dr. Pramod G. Krishnan IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden of Kerala, and Dr. N. Krishnakumar IFS, former PCCF & HoFF of Tamil Nadu, shared their visions for a more resilient forest policy. The speakers emphasised that conservation in 2026 requires a shift from traditional "protectionist" models to more inclusive, data-driven management strategies.
Session 2: Managing the Human-Wildlife Interface
A highlight of the day was the session on Landscape-Level Conservation, moderated by Dr. K.C. Chacko. Leading the discussion, Dr. P.S. Easa (former Director, KFRI) and Dr. P.O. Nameer (KAU) explored the delicate link between ecological dimensions and human-wildlife coexistence. The panel argued for a landscape approach to conservation—recognising that wildlife does not adhere to administrative boundaries—and called for scientific mitigation strategies to address the rising instances of conflict in fringe areas.
Session 3: Addressing Emerging Threats
The afternoon concluded with a forward-looking session on Emerging Threats and Prospects. Shri Rajesh Kumar IFS (Chief Wildlife Warden, UT of Ladakh) provided a unique perspective on conservation challenges in diverse terrains, while Dr. K.V. Sankaran (former Director, KFRI) spoke on the critical threat posed by invasive alien species. Dr. B. Venkatesh from the National Institute of Hydrology addressed the intersection of forestry and water security, highlighting how forest degradation impacts regional hydrology.
The day’s deliberations underscored KFRI's commitment to bridging the gap between scientific research and field-level implementation. As the conclave moves into its third day, the focus will shift toward Advanced Tools and Techniques, exploring how GIS, AI, and genomics are revolutionising the way we monitor and protect our natural heritage.
