A Walk Down Memory Lane
Grand Alumni Get-Together
Saturday, December 20, 2025
The familiar corridors of the KSCSTE-Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) were filled with laughter, nostalgia, and a profound sense of homecoming as the institute hosted its grand Alumni Get-Together on December 19, 2025. This heartwarming reunion served as one of the most significant emotional highlights of the week-long Tropical Forestry Conclave and the institute’s year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations. Bringing together generations of researchers, scientists, and staff who have called the Peechi campus their "home away from home" over the past fifty years, the gathering saw attendees travelling from across the globe to reconnect with old friends and mentors. For many, it was a day to witness the transformation of the institute they helped build—from its humble beginnings in 1975 to its current standing as a world-class centre for tropical forestry research.
The day featured informal "Memory Lane" sessions where alumni shared stories of rugged field expeditions, late-night laboratory breakthroughs, and the enduring bonds formed under the canopy of the Peechi forests. These sessions were not just about looking back; they also focused on fostering a stronger alumni network to mentor current PhD scholars and young researchers. Former scientists took a "Legacy Walk" through their old departments, noting the technological advancements showcased during the conclave’s exhibition while reminiscing about the manual methods of the past. A special segment was dedicated to honouring retired scientists whose pioneering work laid the foundation for KFRI’s international reputation.
As the reunion concluded, there was a shared promise to make such gatherings a more frequent tradition, ensuring that the wealth of alumni experience continues to guide KFRI's future. As the sun set over the Peechi reservoir, the evening was further brightened by the cultural resonance of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, providing a perfect backdrop for a day dedicated to heritage and togetherness. The event stood as a testament to KFRI's lasting impact not just as a research body, but also as a community that continues to grow and nurture the spirit of environmental stewardship.
